　　Write an essay (min.1500 words) on ONE of the following topics:

　　1 The External Business Environment

　　Both India and Brazil are rising economic powers following close on the heels of China. Discuss any similarities and differences in their business environments and how these may impact on global firms operating within their boundaries.

　　Task

　　1 Carry out a literature search on the business environment in India and Brazil.

　　2 On the basis of your research, conduct a PEST analysis of both countries’ business environments. These initial analyses will not be included in the essay but will be included in an appendix and will form the basis of your discussion.

　　3 Write a critical discussion, drawing on your PEST factor analyses, in which you compare and contrast the two countries’ business environments and in which you discuss the impact these may have on the strategies of global firms operating in these two countries.

　　NOTE:

　　· Remember to be critical of the PESTLE as a means of analysis, which means researching and identifying its strengths and weaknesses in the literature.

　　· Remember that you are asked to write a discussion, not a description of each country’s business environment.

　　2 Industry Environment

　　Discuss all aspects of the competitive environment within ONE of the following industries:

　　· The automobile manufacturing industry

　　· The soft drinks industry.

　　2 On the basis of your research, analyse the industry using a customised Porter’s Five Forces Model and any of the other models, eg strategic groups, introduced in the lecture. The customised models will not be included in the essay but will be included in an appendix and will form the basis of your discussion.

　　3 Drawing on your analysis, critically discuss competition and concentration within the industry and some of the methods companies have of withstanding the competition. You may wish to comment on any malpractice, eg monopoly power, restrictive practices, etc.
